It’s hard to believe that a player who was with the Spurs for only a season has the most dramatic sneaker in team history.
But that’s the case, according to a ranking from About.com, which ranks Derek Anderson’s Air Jordan XI Low Retro as 17th on the list of the most iconic sneakers worn in the NBA’s history.
Here’s what story author Ian Stonebrook had to say about Anderson’s kicks:
“Simple and classy, DA’s PE saw the most popular Jordan ever make the move from mid to low. Patent-laden lows have made the rounds just once with this classic untouched. A standout exclusive and still the best sneaker ever worn by a modern-day Spur.”
The only other Spur to make the list was George Gervin, who had the 29th most memorable player-exclusive sneaker with his Nike Blazer from the late 1970s.
“The ancestor of the likes of the Dunk, Air Jordan 1, and Air Force 1, the sneaker was endorsed by the league’s greats. George Gervin was most synonymous with the sneaker as seen on this PE and a tribute makeup that dropped in 2008,” Stonebrook wrote.
On a list dominated by various models of Air Jordans over the years, it’s still notable that two players from small-market San Antonio made the list.
How about it Spurs Nation? Any of you out there have a pair of Air Jordan XI Low Retro because it was Anderson’s shoe of choice?
Or would it make you less likely to wear them because of Anderson’s checkered career during his one season with the Spurs?
